In one of my recent visits to a winery in the Canberra District, I came upon a lovely storey that i would like to share with you.
One of the benefits of having a family owned and operated boutique winery is the ability to reflect on the generations before them that provided inspiration and support. Without the hard work encouragement and support of previous generations many people would not have the opportunity to follow their dreams.
Michael and Wendy O'Dea have been committed to follow their dream of establishing a vineyard and winery and to producing quality wines for people to enjoy with family and friends.
Dionysus Winery is located in Murrumbateman, half way between Canberra and Yass. In 1998 when Michael and Wendy established their vineyard they asked Wendy's grandmother May Mahood to plant the first vine on her 89th birthday.
May has watched her vine grow over the past ten years and it has produced some premium fruit. In recognition of her 99th birthday, Dionysus Winery created a delicate and sweet wine made from the Riesling and 'May Riesling' has been very popular with its namesake as well as visitors to the Cellar Door.
May is now coming up to her 100th birthday, and Dionysus Winery will be releasing a Cabernet Sauvignon made with the fruit planted on her 89th birthday.
The Centenarian Cabernet Sauvignon reflects characteristics of this fine woman - robust with potential for longevity.
