About Us
The Step Road Winery is situated in the beautiful Langhorne Creek region of South Australia, only 70km from the city of Adelaide. We established the winery in 1985 and have a passionate desire to produce world-class wines reflecting the essence of their regions. It is home to two of Australia's most outstanding wine brands: Step Rd and Beresford. Sourced from the leading cool climate regions of Langhorne Creek and the Adelaide Hills, Step Rd wines show true varietal and regional character with persistence and finesse. Beresford wines capture the timeless elegance, powerful complexity and unique essence of McLaren Vale, resulting in wines of great substance, balance and depth.

Our Area
Established as a premium wine-grape producing region as far back as 1860, Langhorne Creek is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions. Situated 70 km south east of Adelaide, this stunning area is surprisingly cool due to its proximity to the Southern Ocean. It is made up of largely flat plains sheltered by the Mount Lofty ranges with low winter-dominant rainfall and moderate daytime temperatures. Grape quality is enhanced by deep, rich alluvial soils, washed down by floods from the Adelaide Hills over centuries. Langhorne Creek is renowned for its reds, in particular Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which show great character, style and elegance.

Our Winemaker
Justin Coates started his winemaking career at the Step Rd Winery in 2001. He worked as a cellar hand while studying winemaking at Charles Sturt University. In 2004 he was appointed Assistant Winemaker and in 2006 was awarded “Members Choice Young Winemaker of the Year” by The Wine Society. Justin took on the senior role as winemaker in 2009.
His winemaking philosophy is simple… to act as caretaker to the fruit; to understand and realise the full potential of the grapes which come into the winery, and to produce wines with structure, style and balance.
