The DOWIE DOOLE family vineyards are home to some of the finest and earliest planted vineyard sites in McLaren Vale. Displaying a distinctive full body and a characteristic smooth, savoury edge, their wines focus on varieties that are naturally suited to McLaren Vale and their particular vineyard sites.
Variety is what gives the McLaren Vale region its strength. As McLaren Vale merges with the Adelaide Hills and the Mount Lofty Ranges, so the climate changes. The area is also influenced by the nearby warm waters of the Gulf St Vincent. Winter dominant rainfall (averaging 580-700mm annually), hot summers and moderate winters, low relative humidity and relatively high evaporation combine with cooling sea breezes in the warmer months to provide grapes with a slow, even ripening period. Wines produced in the region are ripe, flavoursome and balanced.
The terrain is equally varied – ranging from sandy to red brown earth, terra rosa and dark cracking soils. Each soil type produces distinct wines with characters unique to each sub-region. A particular advantage to vines are weak soils which hold very little water and allow accurate control of moisture to the vines via drip irrigation. The vines are forced to struggle, limiting canopy development and producing complex, concentrated fruit.
Chris is the newest member to the DOWIE DOOLE team having started with the company in July of 2011. However, he is not new to DOWIE DOOLE's wines as he has been involved with the company since 2008 while managing DOWIE DOOLE's processing account at Boar’s Rock. Chris graduated in Oenology from the University of Adelaide in 2003 and has a wealth of experience working for top wineries including Fox Creek and Serafino Wines in McLaren Vale and also abroad with Domaine Changarnier in Burgundy. Chris has won a host of awards for his winemaking including the Trophy for Best McLaren Vale Icon Red Wine at the 2010 McLaren Vale Wine Show for the 2007 Serafino “Sharktooth” Shiraz. He is also the chairperson for the McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee. Chris will be responsible for all DD winemaking and will be hitting the road to spread the DD story.
DOWIE DOOLE specialises in Chenin Blanc, the elegant, characterful, firmly acidic white grape. Highly flexible in its nature, Chenin can be made simply, to highlight its natural fruit, or made in a more traditional manner, with wild yeasts, lees contact, old oak, and bottle age before release. Either way, Chenin is a welcome addition to a world cluttered with dull mega-popular white varieties. Its bounteous natural acidity makes it ideal table wine: a glass will actually make you hungry!
All the DOWIE DOOLE Sauvignon Blanc is grown on the high cool Doole Home Block. It is made to be more gentle than the skinny acidic styles which predominate this difficult part of the market. But it’s still bone dry, focused, highly appetising wine that will accompany almost anything you can catch in the Gulf of St Vincent.
DOWIE DOOLE Merlot is never mellow. We believe this hearty Bordelaise grape should be full of character, with the finest oak, and maximum natural acidity, to ensure a good future in the cellar. Having the disparate sources of Tintookie and California Road to select from, we can blend a dead serious luxurious pot of Merlot every year.
This thoroughbred grows in both the California Road and Tintookie vineyards. We want it as fit and tightly-muscled as a thoroughbred, too. Complex, adult and modern, with aristocratic tannins and the promise of great longevity, the DOWIE DOOLE Cabernet Sauvignon is always expected to be a step above the rest.
With premium Shiraz from Old Rifle Range Vineyard, California Road and Tintookie to choose from, DOWIE DOOLE could blend various popular shiraz types. But we pursue the tighter, more intense, yet elegant and reserved style of wine that is perfectly satisfying, will not overwhelm your dining, and is highly rewarding if cellared.
