Company Information

  • About Us
From its first production of 141 cases of 1995 Shiraz, Penny’s Hill has established a fine reputation for outstanding vineyards from which acclaimed wines have emerged.Very much a part of the recent McLaren Vale landscape, the Penny’s Hill story commenced over twenty years ago. From its beginnings on bare grazing land upon which cows and sheep had long trod, the brand is now reflected in some of the very best quality vineyards in the region, fine full-bodied wines which are sold to loyal and appreciative wine lovers not only locally but in all discerning export markets, and a cellar door and restaurant complex recognised nationally for its excellence of food and service, for its iconic location and for its direct links to the farming traditions of the greater region.Welcome to Penny’s Hill and its unique story.
  • Our Area
Dating back to 1838, McLaren Vale, around 40 km south of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, was one of the first regions in the state to be planted with vines. A short cockatoo flight from the crystal clear waters of the Gulf St Vincent, the region is unique for its proximity to a capital city population, and to some of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in the world. McLaren Vale enjoys a true Mediterranean climate: warm summers and moderate winters tempered by the proximity of the Gulf St Vincent, winter dominant rainfall (580-700mm per annum), low relative humidity and high relative evaporation. Rain and frost during vintage are rare. Cooling breezes from the ocean moderate afternoon summer temperatures, and vineyards in the foothills (such as our Penny's Hill vineyard) benefit from cooling 'gully' winds, which blow down from the hills in the early evenings.McLaren Vale is considered one of the safest and most consistent premium grape growing regions in the country, as a result of the moderating maritime climate and a long summer/autumn ripening period.Climatic statistics• Heat degree-days - 1920 • Sunshine hours per day - 8.6 • Annual rainfall - 660mm • Growing season rainfall - 180mm • Average January temperature - 21.7C • Harvest early - mid February to late April McLaren Vale contains a diversity of 'terroirs' or ‘mesoclimates’; that is climatic, landform and soil conditions which exist in a particular site within the region. Elevation is generally between 50-100 metres, but does range from 100 metres in the north to approximately 320 metres in the east. A wide variety of soils are found within the region, ranging from fertile red brown earth (found in the Goss Corner vineyard), terra rossa soils, dark cracking black 'Bay of Biscay' soils (found in parts of the Malpas Road vineyard), rendzina soils, and light loam over clay soils (found in the Penny's Hill vineyard).McLaren Vale was recognized as an Australian wine region in 1997. Geographic Indication (GI) officially establishes the boundary of a region, enabling wineries within the boundary to accurately state their location, and market under their regional banner. The McLaren Vale wine region is bounded in the south by the Sellicks Hill range (a continuation of the Mount Lofty Ranges), extends to the eastern side of Clarendon (now a sub region of McLaren Vale), north to Reynella and is bounded in the west by the shores of Gulf St Vincent.
