Company Information

  • About Us
Established in 1977, Galafrey wines was one of Western Australia's pioneer winemakers in Mount Barker, in the Great Southern region, producing spectacular Reds and Whites alike. Galafrey is proud to make Western Australian wines and be part of such a prestigious industry.

Our old vines are not irrigated; something quite unusual in these days of mass commercial production. We prefer low-yielding wine crops with small berries. Although it limits our volume, having smaller fruit fosters an intensity of the flavour, with most of the colour and tannin of the grape being concentrated in or near the skin.
  • Our Area
The characteristically cool climate of the district ensures slow ripening of the grapes, which also allows for the development of rich flavour and quality grape juice.Overlooking the vineyard with views of the Porongurups and Stirling Ranges.
  • Our Winemaker
Kim and Linda maintain a hands on role at Galafrey Wines ensuring their history and quality are maintained.
  • Grape Varieties
Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Muller Thurgau
  • Our Brands
Galafrey Wines has never planned to be the biggest wineries. We’ve always just focused on being the best.

Linda and Kim run the family-owned winery and all the grapes are grown and nurtured on their dry grown vineyard and estate bottled. Established by Ian Tyrer (1946-2003) Galafrey is survived by mother and daughter team, Linda and Kim Tyrer. Paul Nelson has joined the Galafrey team as the new winemaker

  • Kim Tyrer Receives Young Business Person Award

    Posted April 3, 2012

I used to think people who took a prepared speech to awards nights were a bit up themselves.   However I learnt a valuable lesson on Friday night. When the emotion takes over and you're not sure how to deal with all the attention it is good to have a backup plan of a prepared speech.  ...

What it means to be a busy little wine maker…. My Dad once had an employee in the vineyard who worked a little slow.  Dad said he used the vineyard post to help see if the employee was moving. As a child if I ever said I was bored I immediately got a job… I learnt very quickly t...

  • What a great weekend!!

    Posted December 9, 2011

What a great weekend! Unfortunately in life your circle of friends will ebb and flow. My good friend is leaving WA for SA and is also in the wine industry. So we had a great night at the famous local Mayleeyas Thai with Galafrey Muller and came home for a lovely bottle of red and cheese. A great se...

While looking through some old photos I found these which I would like to share with you. I thought to myself these would be great in my next email newsletter as the pictures by themselves say so much!   They show passion, vision and hope. My parents would have been my age now.   &n...

  • My favourite sales trip was to Japan

    Posted December 3, 2011

As I sit here at our trade day I am reminded of so many previous trade days. I have been to many tastings, festivals and trade days as long as I can remember and as soon as I was 18, I was pushed out the front and began my journey of sales. My most favourite time was a trip to Japan when I was 15. M...

yes, galafrey makes Riesling, in fact , we were one of the first to win an International award for our Riesling in 1991. We also were the first in the region to make a Sparkling Riesling!
I think Mount Barker makes great Riesling, in fact, one third of our vineyard is Riesling.

    cheers and enjoy the wine!

in the topic Christmas wine gifts? in the forum Wine Chat
As I sit here on my computer working on our Christmas newsletter I start to think of Christmas wine gifts. What is the best? what is the worst? We've had them all. Glasses, bottle openers, vintage wines and ports, aprons etc. It is amazing some of the awful wine we have recieved here at Galafrey as a gift. Not to mention a dear friend, he gets fined by his local wine club each time we arrive at the wine club because he brought a cask wine to dinner at a winemakers house! Some one also gave us a bottle of Matues rose once. In fact I have been given alot of dodgy rose in my life. Personly I am a big fan of magnums. Recently I was given a 2001 Heytesbury ...yummo. I got a Krug and numerous other french champagnes for engagement pressies. Still have the Krug...must open it sometime! Would love to buy my baby boy Jack something for his birth this year?? got a 6 litre of Peter Rumball sitting in my cellar as well. And a Magnum of Verve. Ofcourse I have the complete collection of Galafrey's finest...a gift to my self. Got some lovely Riedel Glasses for wedding presents and some very fancy champange glasses to go with the Krug. I constantly give my husband nice liquors when I am stuck for gift ideas...wiskey, cognac, amegnac etc. Of course some decanters over the years. Wine such a great gift!

in the topic Are you a Riesling Freak?? in the forum Wine Chat
I grew up in a Riesling Freak area called Mount Barker Western Australia. Mount Barker has often received great reviews from various writers ( well supported by James Halliday) as being a great cool climate area that produce great Rieslings!
May Riesling be the new Sauv Blanc!
